Cora Berniece (Tackett) Ledgerwood was born Sept. 13, 1937, near Thomasville, MO, to Luther Martin and Cora Jane (Harris) Tackett and left this life on July 28, 2021, at the age of 83, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO.

Berniece was from a family of 1 brother and 8 “Tackett girls”. She attended school at Thomasville and caught the eye of her future husband, Bob, at a church New Year's Eve party. They were married Dec. 27, 1952, in Hardy, AR, and to this union 2 children were born, Bobbie Keith and Brenda Marleen.

Berniece is preceded in death by her parents and siblings Violet Walker, Thelma Walker, James Tackett, Clarice Peer, Lola Strong, and Dorcas Hickman.

She is survived by her husband Bob, sisters Virginia Green, Wichita, KS, and Donna Davis, Alton, MO, her children, Keith (Brenda) of Alton and Brenda (Barry) Randolph of Cape Girardeau, MO, and grandchildren, Betsy (Richard) AuBuchon, Patrick (Tracy) Ledgerwood, Brian Randolph, Aaron (Jess) Randolph, 9 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Upon marrying, Berniece and Bob lived in Washington state, then returned to Oregon County where Berniece worked by Bob's side to operate Ledgerwood Lumber, an integral part of the Alton community for 32 years. Berniece loved Bob and her children and grandchildren, and took great pride in their life accomplishments and in having 2 great-granddaughters carry her, and her mother's, first name. Berniece was known as a wonderful cook, decorator, and hostess. She loved family visits and dinners, giggling with her sisters, shopping trips, tour bus trips with her 2 longtime friends, and holidays, especially Christmas. Collecting holiday décor, antique dishes and jewelry was a favorite hobby.

Berniece was baptized as a young adult, attended Victory FWBC in Alton, and was quick to pray for a family member in need. She was a founding member of the Alton Culture Club. As she and Bob faced failing health, they moved from Alton to the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, MO. Nicknamed “Colonel” by her family, Berniece valiantly fought health issues for many years. Her final battle has been won. She will be sadly missed.

Due to Covid, a graveside service will be held Sunday, Aug. 1, 2021, at 2pm in the Huddleston Cemetery, with Bro. Jason Roberts officiating. Pallbearers include Aaron Randolph, Patrick Ledgerwood, Royce Ledgerwood, Kaleb Ledgerwood, Richard AuBuchon, Bob Wright, and Capt. Brian Randolph, honorary pallbearer.

The family requests donations be made to Huddleston Cemetery in memory of Berniece.
