Survivors include 4 daughters: Kathryn Minich, Marilyn Minich, Virginia Lister and husband Bob, Barbara Alford and husband Charles; 7 grandchildren: Daniel Neikes, Kelly Lister Schellman and husband Ben, Megan Lister Wilson and husband Justin, Clay Lister and wife Jennifer, Jaime Lister, Frank Alford and wife Kari, James Alford and Kayla; 4 great grandchildren: Lexi Neikes, Landry Schellman, Bennett Schellman, and Oliver Wilson.

Betty was preceded in death by husband Joe Dan, parents Harry Omaha and Mary Lee (Floyd) Gum, sister Barbara Books, brother Jesse Amos Gum, brothers-in-law Maurice Books, Charles Bowling, and Jack Minich, sisters-in-law Betty Lew (DeeDee) (Brightwell) Gum, Norma Jean (Minich) Bowling, and Bette June (Davis) Minich, nephew Jim Books, niece Martha (Gum) Whitten, great-niece Grace Keeney and great-nephew Dusty Whitten.

June 6, 1948, Joe Dan Minich and Betty Nan Gum were married at Thomasville, MO. Joe and Betty were lifelong active members of the Alton First Baptist Church. Betty’s involvement stretched beyond local individual churches to connect people in missions and ministry. She loved to worship in music and song, and passed her love of music on to her family.

Betty Nan taught home economics at Thomasville and Alton, and was instrumental in building a successful Future Homemakers of America (FHA) program, giving high school students many opportunities for state and national leadership training and experiences. Many lives were touched as Betty encouraged and taught basic life skills as well as leadership and community involvement. Betty volunteered with many area organizations, including serving for many years on the Oregon County Fair and Library Boards. She loved to read and travel, always eager to learn new things and experience new delights. Sports were a big part of Betty’s life. While attending the University of Missouri at Columbia, Betty was a member of a synchronized swim team and enjoyed playing tennis. Many of the stories of Joe and Betty’s early life together revolved around baseball games, and for many years she was a fixture at the local school games. While Betty attended every event she could that involved her grandchildren, she was also always eager to attend school events others were involved in to encourage young students and teachers.

Family was a source of fun and pride for Betty. She creatively sewed for her daughters, from play clothes to wedding dresses. Cooking, quilting, crocheting, gardening, and genealogy were among her passions. She was particularly proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and delighted in attending Scouting, 4-H, performance or other events. As her daughters and grandchildren brought new members into the family, Betty welcomed them all with love.
Betty loved time spent fishing with Joe, as well as canoeing and camping with her family. Many days were spent with her children hiking and exploring local areas of interest. The family has many memories and stories of time spent on the river, canoeing, tubing, and swimming. Most of those stories involve some form of horseplay, often instigated by Betty, though she was an expert at playing the innocent.

The family wishes to extend a sincere and heartfelt thanks to Shepherd’s View staff and residents and Three Rivers Hospice for the love, support and encouragement given during Betty’s time with them. These relationships have been true blessings for both Betty and her family.

Betty was loved by many and her infectious smile and laughter will be greatly missed.

In honor of Betty a Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 23, 2017, 2 pm, at Alton First Baptist Church with Bro. Mark Mc Manus officiating. Visitation will also be held at Alton First Baptist Church Saturday from 12 noon to time of service. Interment will be in the Hickory Grove Cemetery under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home, Alton, MO.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Alton First Baptist Church or to the renovation fund for the Thomasville Library.
