Earl Cornelius Jones, age 85 of Jonesboro, AR, was born January 4, 1931, and passed away May 8, 2016.

Survivors include: 2 nephews, David Nelms and wife Paula of Jonesboro, AR, and Richie Nelms and wife Cathy of Memphis, TN; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Graduating Brookland High School in 1949 he was employed seven years with the ST. Louis Southwestern Railway Company as a clerk/telegrapher. In 1952 he took a leave of absence to serve in the U.S. Army and was in the Korean War February 28, 1952, to December 1, 1953. In 1954 he attended Arkansas State College. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on May 15, 1957, as A3C and received Radar Maintenance and Computer repair training at Keesler AFB, Louisiana, Lake Charles AFS, Louisana, and Brownsville, TX. He was assigned to Sweetwater AFS, Texas, where he stayed four and a half years as a computer specialist. He was Airman of the Month after being elected unanimously as President of the Airman Council and promoted to Staff Sergeant. He served during two wars being at King Salmon AFS, Alaska, in 1964. He was there when the 9.2 earthquake hit Anchorage in November (the largest earthquake to hit North America). He was retired a Staff Sergeant on October 19, 1965, from the U.S.A.F. with honor and faithfulness. His hobby was to repair clocks, computers and do some fishing and hunting.

He married Judy Ann Taylor of Mammoth Spring, AR, on Oct. 8, 1968. He remarried Verna Chadwick Nutt on September 30, 1990, after death of his first wife. He attended church at Stone St. Church of Christ in Truman, Melton St. Church of Christ and formerly at Northside Church of Christ. He was a life member of the Disable American Veterans.

Graveside services will be 3pm Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at the Riverside Cemetery in Mammoth Spring, AR. Arrangements are under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home of Thayer, MO.
