David Knight Gardner, age 78, passed away April 25, 2016 at the Ozarks Medical Center, West Plains, MO. Survivors include; his wife Wanda Grantham-Gardner, a daughter, Ann Marie Gardner, three sons, Guy, Robert and Richard Gammill and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Ansel Gardner and Gertrude Knight-Gardner. Dave was born in El Paso, TX on Jan 19, 1938. He lived on the family ranch at Nutt, New Mexico. Educated at St Mary’s Catholic School, Deming High & New Mexico State University. Dave was an outstanding cowboy and ranched or managed ranches most of his life. He was a natural artist, having never attended an art school. The first bronze cast in 1976 at Prescott, AZ was titled “First Go†was a cowboy with saddle & tack in hand. His works included an 8ft. Church Steeple at Bay Springs, MS was Christ’s Hands holding the world with a cross on top. Dave also sculpted a 5ft. replica of “Judge Roy Beans Court “ titled “Law West of the Pecos†cast in 1981 at Austin TX. Dave has bronzes in several states, Paraguay and England. He is self taught after an accident where he lost the tips of fingers on his right hand. He did his works in bees wax and most of his sculptures are of ranch scenes or cowboy life as he had lived it. He also has been making Custom made boots since 1986 & a lot of those boots featured artwork in the tops. He has boots in most of the states & Australia and Turkey. Dave was an all around great cowboy and his Dad and brother are also in the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Dave retired to Alton MO in 2004. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the Shiloh Freewill Baptist Church, Alton, MO, with a visitation 1:00 pm until service time. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Shiloh Freewill Baptist Church or the Gideon’s in David Gardner‘s name. |
