Joe Bailey Whitten, of Alton, Missouri, passed away on March 17, 2016 at Shepherd’s View Residential Care Facility. Joe was born April 10, 1927 to Edgar and Samantha Whitten in Alton.

Joe proudly served in the Navy during WWII, first on the Seahawk Submarine and then on the Salisbury Sound battle cruiser. After returning home, Joe attended Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri and graduated with a degree in Education. He taught one year at Whitten School, a one room school house in Whitten Community. On May 20, 1947, Joe married Freda Williams in Couch, Missouri. The newlyweds lived in St. Louis then moved to their home on the family farm on Eleven Point River. Joe then established Joe Whitten Land and Cattle Company, where he bought and sold cows and pigs, transporting them all over the United States. Joe served for many years on the Alton School Board and as a Deacon of Alton First Baptist Church. Joe was an avid hunter and loved spending time at Spring Creek with his hunting buddies. He was an enthusiastic Alton Comet fan especially watching his grandsons play basketball. He was also a devoted St. Louis Cardinals fan, never missing a game. Joe never met a stranger and loved to sit and talk with people. He was a wonderful husband and father and was especially proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his beautiful wife of sixty-eight years, Freda, children Jerry Whitten, Pam Ream and her husband Scott; three grandchildren, Chris Whitten and his wife Annie, Ben Whitten and Jessica Beauchamp, and Delaney Ream; three great grandchildren, Brooke Beauchamp, Drew Whitten and J. T. Whitten, along with one brother, Charles Whitten and his wife Dorothy, sister, Carolyn Johnson and her husband Dale, sisters-in-law Angie Huddleston, Lois Goldman, Lillie Croney, Bonnie Williams and brother-in-law, Charles Williams and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and James Huddleston, Nancy and Luther Stanley, Hazel and Howard Reed, June and Bill Williams, Emma Lou and John Lewis Casey, Georgia and Henry Williams, Cleo Williams and one daughter-in-law, Martha Whitten and grandson, Dusty Whitten.

Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Alton First Baptist Church. Memorial services will follow at 2:00 p.m. under the direction of Clary’s Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Smith Cemetery, Alton, MO. Pallbearers will be Brant Casey, Monty Casey, Jeff Croney, Allen Huddleston, Dennis Johnson, Rick Johnson and Gary Williams. Honorary Pallbearers will be Noel Bathe, Bud Orr and Richard Risner.
