Nellie Annalee Custer of Springfield, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 in her home at the age of 91.

Born on January 17, 1923, to William Henry “Bill” Peters and Telitha Evelyn “Litha” Peters in Fort Blackmore, Virginia, Nell was the youngest of eight children. Amazingly, she only weighed about 1 ½ pounds at birth and told of how her mom made her a doll's dress to wear because she was so tiny and that she later used it to dress her own dolls. She would smile and tell how her parents would have to pin her to the pillow on their bed to keep from losing her.
Nell only finished the 7th grade due to her mother's death when Nell was only 13. Nell stayed home to help with the chores and to take care of her father who died two years later of eye cancer. After his passing, Nell moved to Arlington, Virginia to live with her sister, Rosie and and Rosie's husband, Aud. Nell held several jobs in Arlington and and told of meeting General Patton, Spencer Tracy, and June Carter Cash. She later moved to Detroit, Michigan where she met and later married the love of her life, James “Jim” Custer in 1955. Their loving marriage lasted 54 years until Jim's death in 2010.

Nell was a quiet, peaceful, helpful person and was often the person neighbors and family came to for advice. She loved being outside on warm, sunny days, either working in her yard or just rocking in her glider enjoying all of God's beauty that surrounded her. She was a hard-worker, kept a spotless home, and was known for being one of the best cooks around. She loved her family and friends. Nell asked the Lord to come into her life at the age of 12 and was a member of the Alton Freewill Baptist Church. She will be greatly missed, but our loss is heaven's gain.

Nell was preceded in death by her husband Jim Custer, by her parents, Bill and Litha Peters, seven siblings Bessie Peters Lane, Wales W. Peters, Corbin H. Peters, Alphia H. Peters Lane, Alfred Ofairl Peters, Edna L. Peters Smith, and Rosie Peters Carrico.

Nell is survived by her children, James Allen Custer of Muskegon, Michigan, Susan Chronister and husband Dwight of Alton, Missouri, and Debbie Custer of Springfield, Missouri; her seven grandchildren Dawn Levernier of Muskegon, Michigan, Kenny Custer of Muskegon, Michigan, Jennifer Clovis of Fort White, Florida, Jocelyn Custer of Muskegon, Michigan, Kayla Collins of Alton, Missouri, Lindsey Chronister of Alton, Missouri, and Skyler Chronister of Alton, Missouri; and her nine great-grandchildren, Emily Custer, Wade Custer, Alicia Levernier, Chris Levernier, Travis Custer, Noah Hill, Brandon Clovis, Olivia Collins, and Adalynd Collins.

Services will be Sunday, February 2, 2014 at Two P.M at the First Baptist Church Alton, Missouri with Pastor Jason Roberts officiating. Pallbearers will be Skyler Chronister, Anthony Collins, Kenny Custer and Matthew Drake. Interment will be in the Cave Springs Cemetry, with arrangements under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home, Alton, MO.
