John Stewart Johnson of West Plains, MO was born on December 23, 1921, in Midco, MO. He passed away January 15, 2014, in Poplar Bluff, MO. Survivors include his three children (Anita, Dave, Mark), six grandchildren (Rod, Beth, Jessica, Amy, Chris, Tim) and three great grandchildren. Mr. Johnson served in the US Marine Corps during WWII. He was captured on his 20th birthday defending Wake Island and was not released until the end of the war. The defenders of Wake Island hold a distinguished legacy in the Marine Corps. Speaking of the Japanese high command, the Commandant of the Marine Corps stated, “But they could not believe a few crummy Marines had stopped that whole Japanese Fleet.” Visitation will be 9:00 - 11:00a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2014, at the Clary Funeral Home, Alton, MO, with the funeral at 11:00 a.m. and burial immediately following at the Hickory Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to a veterans’ charity of your choice. |
