Vera Melton was born the daughter of Timothy and Lessie Ridenour on March 9, 1930 in St. Louis and departed this life May 24, 2011, in Thayer, Missouri, at the age of 81 years old. She was united in marriage May 11, 1946 to James Albert Melton in Belleville, Illinois. To this union, six children were born: Carolyn, Lois, David (Pete), Anthony (Tony), Jacquetta (Jacqui), and Carla.

She is survived by her husband , Jim Melton, of Thayer, Missouri, and four daughters: Carolyn Robinson (Johnny) of Winfield, Missouri; Lois Bechtel (Larry) of Thayer, Missouri; Jacquetta (Jacqui) Melton of Arcadia, California; and Carla Jansen (John) of Rancho Cucamonga, California; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Leon Ridenour (Peggy) of Florissant, Missouri; and sister, Jewell Re of Crestwood, Missouri; many nieces and nephews, cousins and countless friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, David (Pete) Melton, and Anthony (Tony) Melton; three brothers, Homer, W.J. and Alvin; three sisters, Ada, Ida, and Pauline.

Vera was a dedicated mother, homemaker, and Christian. Besides raising her six children, she played a large part in raising numerous children who were on the JMC Racing Team. As the team mom, she cared for the kids as if they were her own. They loved and respected her and called her “The Warden.”

Vera loved being a grandma. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. She faithfully prayed for all of them with a loving heart, as she did for all her friends and family. She attended Grand Gulf Shiloh Church. She loved her church and church family with all her heart. She was honored to be part of something so beautiful.

Funeral Services will be 10am Saturday, May 28, 2011, at the Clary Funeral Home in Thayer, MO, with burial following in the Shiloh Cemetery. Visitation will be 6pm-8pm Friday, May 27, 2011. Arrangements are under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home of Thayer, MO.
