Lovel Allen Roberts, age 98, son of James Henry Roberts and Lilly Odessa Gage Roberts, was born October 15, 1912, in a little log cabin on what is now KK highway in Oregon County, Missouri, and passed away April 3, 2011, at his home. His parents moved from their cabin to a farm his father purchased at Piney. He received his education in a one-room schoolhouse there. He lost both his father and mother at an early age. When he was 20, he married Hattie Mary Roy. They had a double wedding along with Lovel’s brother, Floyd and Hattie’s sister, Sarah. The couples were close neighboring each other, farming together, canning and raising their children. Lovel and Hattie were blessed with four children. The first was a son, Allen Dale, then a daughter, Reta Doris, another son, Kenneth Wayne, and the youngest son, James Darrell, “J.D.”. Through the years Lovel became a successful farmer. Although he worked for short periods of time for Howell-Oregon Electric Co-op, for a sawmill, or doing carpentry work, his living was mostly made from dairy, beef and hog farming. He was converted at an early age, and followed Christ in baptism, being baptized in Fredrick Creek at Job.

His children, along with their spouses and companions, Beth, Raymond, Betty, Linda and Kay gave him ten grandchildren: Debbie Gale, Pamela Lvonne, Shana Lannae, Shelia Denise, Sonyia DeAnn, Shelley Renae, Regina Michelle, Kimber Wayne, Kalan Shane, and Jeremy Darrell.

These grandchildren along with their spouses and companions gave him 27 great grandchildren. They are Anthony, Monica, Joshua, Emily, Seth, Zachary, Amanda, Shalyn, Brittany, Allen, Chad, Kib, Kyle, Jerome Kenneth, Kyle Joseph, Serena, Megan, Jade, Micah, Nick, Alyssa, MaKaylah, Sawyer, Jonah, Gabriella, and also Chris and Lynn. He is called Great-great Grandpa by Blain, Keaton, Kadon, Sagan, McKenzie, Moriah, Cash, Cannon, and also Grace and Mary.

Lovel came from a family of nine children. His sisters were Goldie Williams, Alma Williams, Ada Combs, and Ollie Thompson. His brothers were Floyd, Paul, Arlie, and Charlie Roberts. His parents, all of his siblings and their spouses precede him in death except his sisters-in-law, Sarah and Inez Roberts. In April 1998, his wife of 66 years was laid to rest. In August 2005, one of his precious sons, Dale was laid to rest. In April 2007, his one and only daughter, Reta Doris, slipped away to meet Jesus also.

Lovel was inherent to a life of humbleness and fortitude. He stayed by his wife for nearly four months in the hospital, during her illness. When she came home, he took care of her. When she decided to go to the nursing home, he went almost every day to see her. Many years he grew a large garden to share its produce with the children and grandchildren. He loved his family. As he grew older, hearing for him and brother Paul became more difficult. They would visit and mouth the words “I love you” to each other. It was something each knew, yet never grew too old to tell other what was in their hearts. To all his family and friends he has left a legacy of unconditional love. He will be remembered for his quick wit, twinkling blue loving eyes, whistling while he worked, playing harmonica, laughter, and practical jokes. He enjoyed fishing and playing checkers.

Funeral Services will be 2pm Thursday, April 7, 2011, at the Clary Funeral Home in Thayer, MO, with Bro. Jason Roberts officiating, and burial following in the Cotton Creek Cemetery. Family night will be 6pm-8pm Wednesday, April 6, 2011. Arrangements are under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home of Thayer, MO.
