John Leonard Hughes, JR, age 85 of Alton, MO was born January 5, 1925 in San Bernardino, CA and passed away March 19, 2010 at the Shepherds View Residential Care Center, Alton, MO. He was united in marriage to Lorna Alice Hills on August 6, 1957 in Reno Nevada, who survives. Other survivors include; one daughter, Terry Jackson of Mammoth Spring, AR, two sons, Timothy Hills of Sparks, OK, David Hughes of Fairhaven, MA, one brother, Ray Hughes, one sister, Alice Mikowski, both of the state of Oregon, eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, John L. Hughes, SR and Cyrilla Hughes and two sisters. John was a man of many talents, most of which he denied. His experiences included commercial fishing, road building, surveying, dynamite mining and logging on the West; from tugboating to rafting logs. He was a boatbuilder and loved airplanes. In Word War II he was a ball turret gunner on a B-17. He also worked in paving, oil wells, painting, roofing, unloading bags of cement from train cars and glad to do at the time (Mtn. View hard times) and many more things to provide for his family. As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, he spent as much time as he could sharing the Good News of God’s Kingdom with his neighbors and friends. His grandchildren, along with all of his friends and family, reflect on his many stories which he could tell with such captivation, never highlighting himself. John’s life stories, his dry sense of humor and coy grin will be dearly missed by all who loved him. He was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses May 5, 1962. |
