Mr. Hiestand was born on February 17, 1939 and joined the Lord on April 9, 2009 at age 70. Mr. Hiestand was born in Brook, Indiana to Basil Hiestand and Hettie Abbott. He spent his youth in Brook until he graduated from Brook High School in 1957. After high school, Mr. Hiestand joined the United States Army, serving tours in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam. Mr. Hiestand retired from the military in Leesville, Louisiana after 22 years of active duty.

During his younger years he enjoyed racing cars, fishing, and hunting.

Mr. Hiestand was employed in several lines of work, including owning his own insurance agency. In his later years, he joined his family in Thayer, Missouri where he enjoyed music, reading, and playing cards with his mother.

He is survived by his mother, Hettie Abbott of Thayer, Missouri; 4 children, Leila (Joey) Strickland, Paul (Robyn) Hiestand, Ramona (Tony) Bombassi, and Jeffrey (Christina) Hiestand; 1 sister, Lois Johnson; 2 brothers, Douglas Hiestand and Charles Abbott; 8 grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Basil Hiestand.

Bernard’s wishes were to be cremated, and buried alongside his family in Brook, IN. Arrangements are under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home of Thayer, MO. A private family service will follow in Louisiana at a later date.
