Survivors include: 1 daughter, Joyce White Somraty of Lodi, CA; 1 son, Delbert White of Inez, TX; 2 granddaughters, Laurelle White of Fort Worth, TX, and Lanelle White of Victoria, TX; and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Melissa Odell (Young) White; his parents, Harmon and Nellie (Carroll) White; 1 sister, Beatrice (White) Beets; and 1 brother John White. Truman was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad for 34 years in the greater Kansas City area. He was a certified Yard Master, Engine Foreman, Switchman, and Brakeman, for the Kansas City Terminal Railroad, the Rock Island Railroad, and the KCS-Kansas City Southern Railroad. During his service as a switchman, he switched the Pullman car that carried the atomic bomb, which was guarded by a squad of soldiers with orders to shoot anyone who approached within 60 feet of the car. He told the Army captain that unless he threw the rail switch, the Pullman car would sit on the tracks for a very long time. The Army Captain relented and Truman threw the switch. When the Captain returned 2 weeks later, he told him they had been transporting the atomic bomb. Truman was also a Master Mason, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 643 in Kansas City, MO. He will be loved and missed by all. Graveside Services will be 9am Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at the Riverside Cemetery in Mammoth Spring, AR. Visitation will be 6pm-8pm Monday, May 26, 2008.
