Joan Murl Johnson, age 95 of Alton, Missouri was born September 4,1929, in Oregon County, Missouri and passed away November 12, 2024. Joan served as an assistant teacher at Royal Oak school while she was still in high school, where she was also in Glee Club and Home Ec. Club, worked on the Paper Staff and Annual Staff, and played volleyball. Written beside her picture in the Alton High School yearbook are the words, “One of the beauties of our class.” After graduation, Joan moved to Springfield, Missouri, to attend cosmetology school. She worked as a beautician (in a time when not many women had careers) until her marriage. Joan married the love of her life, Donald Gale Johnson, on June 28, 1952. On this side of Heaven, they shared the first chapter of their marriage: over 60 years of camping trips, gardening, coffee on the front porch, big breakfasts during deer season, and building their dream home in Alton. The second chapter of their marriage came after Don went to be with Jesus in 2013, when Joan’s love for her husband continued to guide and sustain her through the last decade of her life. In her heart, she was married to her best friend for 72 years. Aside from spending time with Don, Joan’s most treasured moments were spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She liked to tell everyone she met they were all “her favorite.” She loved them all “a bushel and a peck and 10,000 hugs around the neck.” Joan’s survivors include 2 sons, Phillip Mark Johnson and wife Eva of Marionville, Missouri, and Randy Johnson and wife Renee of Ozark, Missouri; 8 “grands,” Jeremiah Johnson, Cynthia Yardley, David Johnson, Jonathan Grindstaff, Mandi Reed, Sheena Peña, Haley Calvo, and Chad Johnson; 12 “great grands,” 7 “great-great-grands,” and numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Don; her parents, Andrew Claude and Viola Pearl (Woods) Dotson; 3 sisters, Shirley, Sylvia, and Evelyn; and 3 brothers, Adrian, Hugh, and Ray. Services will be 2:00 pm Friday, November 15, 2024, at the Clary Funeral Home in Alton, Missouri, with Bro. David Case officiating, and a burial following in the Huddleston Cemetery. Visitation will be held at 1:00pm prior to the funeral service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home of Alton, Missouri. |
