Grove, MO, Jaysa and Jenna Jenkins, Van Buren, MO, Kessie and Kamie Jenkins, Batesville, AR, Braeden and Collin Jackson, Willis, TX, Tana Downum and great-great-grandson Koel, Belle Chase, LA, numerous nieces, nephews, and the staff at Shepherds View, who became like family to her, and made her final five years so pleasant and comfortable. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 11 year old son Donald Ray, brothers, Amos and Ray Davis, sisters Avis Waeltz and Alta Driesel, brother-n-laws Ralph Jenkins and Harry Jenkins and wife Violet, sister-in-laws, Mabel and husband Alva Douglas, Ruth and husband Bonnie Bartley. Leona attended a rural school which her great-grandfather had helped to organize and build. It was quite a walk to school, but accompanied by older siblings and cousins, was a fun time. There was a two year school about 5 miles away and she rode a horse there. The teachers encouraged her to continue high school so her parents made arrangements for her to board with a family in Licking. She completed one year there, but met Wallace Jenkins during that year. Knowing it was a financial burden for her parents she married Wallace on August 4, 1928, instead of finishing her education. Her life was committed to her Church and her children’s education and well being. She was extremely proud that every one of her grandchildren got a college education. Their family was reared during the depths of the great depression. She was very frugal for the rest of her life, never throwing anything away. She had no memory of ever feeling poor, as they always had plenty of food which was all produced on the farm. She and Wallace bought the South Missourian Democrat newspaper in 1964. She taught Sunday school at the First Baptist Church, was the first president of the Alton School PTA, and was active in the Women’s Extension Club. She loved flowers and grew them abundantly on her “back porch” and well as in her yard. She was an inspiration for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be sadly missed by all of her family. Services will be 10:00am Friday, May 10, 2013 at the Clary Funeral Home, Alton, MO with Bro. Edward Casey and Bro. Bob Wiggs officiating. A graveside service will be at 2:00pm Friday at the Boone Creek Cemetery, near Licking, MO. |
