Betty Lew “Deedee” Gum, age 86 of Willow Springs, MO, formerly of Alton, MO was born August 4, 1926 and passed away October 24, 2012 at the Willow Care Nursing Center, Willow Springs, MO.

Deedee grew up in Slater, MO, graduating high school from there in 1945. She was united in marriage to Amos Gum on February 9, 1947 in Slater, MO and to this union four children were born After raising her children, Deedee returned to school, graduating from Southwest Missouri State in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and then taught Social studies at Alton High School until she retired in 1989. She had many loves in life, including playing golf with friends, feeding and watching birds and wildlife in her yard, eating at Thomasville with friends, watching her grandkids grow up, watching Alton Comet and Drury Panther basketball. Most of all, Deedee enjoyed trips to the Eleven Point River with Amos, where together they marveled over God’s creation. She was a long time member of the Alton 1st Baptist Church, where she enjoyed serving at church meals and other activities.

Survivors include, three children, Mike and wife Brenda, Mac and wife Pinky, Pete and wife Denise, nine grandchildren, Amber, Jesse, Chris, Ben, Nikki, Steven, Michael, Janine and Derek, six great-grandchildren, Adelyna, Roak, Maryssa, Claire, Nicholas and Drew, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were parents, Lewis E. Brightwell and Estelle Haney Brightwell, her husband, Amos, a daughter, Martha Whitten and a grandson, Dusty.

Services will be 1:00pm Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Alton 1st Baptist Church with Bro. Keith Combs officiating, burial in the Smith Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Arrangements under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home, Alton, MO.
