Donnie O. (Chig) McGuire, 93, youngest son of R. W. McGuire and Polly Jane Parrott McGuire, was born on September 4, 1917, and died October 4, 2010. He was married to Elizabeth (Betty) Kriegh on February 17, 1941, and to this union four children were born. Donnie graduated from Thayer High School, and served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII, participating in numerous conflicts in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. He opened the Alton Jewelry Store in 1948, and he and Betty owned and operated this store until 1982. In 1953, they contracted for the Star Route Mail Service, and they carried the mail on this route for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Alton Church of Christ, where he served for many years as a Bible teacher and as a song leader. Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; two daughters, Donna Jean Caruthers and husband, Don, of Alton, and Micki McGuire Kirkham and husband, Gene, of Columbia, MO; two sons, David Elton McGuire and wife, Jeanette, of Maumelle, AR, and James Alan McGuire of Austin, TX; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, step-sister Barbara Prantl of Brandsville, MO; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Martha Jane McGuire, a brother, William Doyle McGuire, four sisters, Elva Jane Sifford, Bessie May Raley, Ethyl Belle Holland, and Dorothy Elizabeth Cole, and granddaughter, Deanna Lynn Caruthers. Services will be 11:00am Thursday, October 7, 2010, at the Clary Funeral Home Chapel in Alton, MO, with Dennis Willard officiating. Burial will be in the Hickory Grove Cemetery. Visitation 6:00-8:00pm Wednesday at the funeral home. |
