Virgil L. Winkler, 77, of Licking, MO, passed away Friday, August 28 at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, MO.
He was born June 16, 1932, to Roscoe and Virginia (Guinn) Winkler in Hereford, TX, who preceded him in death. He married his childhood sweetheart, Alice “Louise” Barton, on March 24, 1951, who survives of the home.

He is survived by three children: daughter Phyllis Powell, and husband Harold of Jefferson City, MO; son Jim Winkler of California, MO; daughter Loetta Meister, and husband Darryl, of Fulton, MO. He had four grandchildren: Melissa Powell Ortega of Jefferson City, Christopher Winkler of Jefferson City, Julie Winkler Bolinger of Four Seasons, MO, and Maranda Cary Evarts of Springfield, MO. He is also survived by six great grandchildren: Clayton Winkler, David Evarts, London Ortega, Ryan Evarts, Cadence Winkler, and Benjamin Evarts. He was preceded in death by two great grandchildren who died before birth.
He is also survived by two brothers, and two sisters: Grady Winkler, Ruth Clark and husband Jerry, and Elbert Winkler and wife Jean, of Jamestown, CA, and Lena Warren of Cloverdale, CA, as well as several nephews, nieces, and brothers and sisters-in-law.

Virgil worked in the building and construction trades most of his life, as a bricklayer, carpenter, machinist, mechanic, and most recently on his own farm and machine shop in Licking, MO. He also loved playing the guitar and “making music” with his family as well as woodworking. He created many unique wooden gifts that he gave to family members in the past few years which they will cherish.

Virgil and his wife of 58 years worshipped at many churches in the various towns in which they lived, and were loved by their pastors and fellow church members.

Services will be 11:00am Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at the Victory Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Darrel E. Loughridge officiating. Interment will be in the Cave Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00pm Monday at the Clary Funeral Home, Alton, MO.
