A Tribute to James (Jim) Powell He showed me a rare example of human life which he lived honorably and well. He loved to argue world politics. He was a lover of ideas and unafraid to think and was eager to explore every aspect of creation. He knew neither age nor weariness nor defeat. He was a master at knowing how to turn an ordinary event into a special occasion; but every victory was matched by sorrow caused by declining health problems. His wonderful warm and outgoing manners afforded him many friends. The strength of his character was a combination of the sweetness, gentleness and the most tempered steel. His values were by necessity a product of his time and place. He withstood the misfortunes of his life with fortitude. He was a brave handsome gentle giant. In the last two years he returned to Alton Missouri, near his remaining family - nephews and niece, Philip, Stephen and Carol Colley. His remark to me, "I'm like the elephants returning to my burial ground." He is missed in so many ways by me and all who knew him. Marie Freeman 4 Park Lane Fort Worth, TX 76132 |
